Chemical Plant VOC Challenge

A chemical manufacturing plant in Jiangsu Province required an effective VOC emission control system to comply with increasingly strict air pollution regulations.

The Challenge

The plant produces specialty chemicals, generating exhaust gas containing complex VOCs including toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate, and other organic solvents. The total exhaust volume reaches 30,000 m³/h with VOC concentrations fluctuating between 200-800 mg/m³.

  • Complex multi-component VOC mixture (toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate)
  • High and fluctuating emission concentrations (200-800 mg/m³)
  • Need to meet emission standard (< 50 mg/m³)
  • Continuous 24/7 operation requirement
  • Limited space for equipment installation

Two-Stage VOC Treatment Process

Soto Machinery designed a combined UV photolysis + activated carbon adsorption system for comprehensive VOC abatement.

1

Gas Collection & Pre-Treatment

Fume hoods and ducting collect VOC-laden gas. Pre-filter removes particulates and moisture droplets.

2

UV Photolysis Decomposition

High-energy UV lamps break down VOC molecular bonds, converting complex organics into simpler compounds like CO₂ and H₂O.

3

Activated Carbon Adsorption

Granular activated carbon beds adsorb residual VOCs and odorous compounds for final polishing to meet standards.

4

Stack Discharge

Cleaned gas is discharged through a 15-meter stack. Continuous emission monitoring ensures compliance.

Emission Control Performance

The system has been operating reliably since commissioning, consistently meeting emission standards.
