Wuhan Pharmaceutical Factory Animal Room Deodorization
Dependable exhaust air deodorization solution for a Wuhan pharmaceutical factory’s animal facility. Specifically, it combines UV photocatalytic oxidation with natural plant-based spray technology.
Project Overview
First, Soto Machinery completed this project for a well-established pharmaceutical manufacturing company in Wuhan. Wuhan serves as the capital city of Hubei Province in central China. Additionally, the client operates a modern pharmaceutical production facility with an integrated animal room. This room houses laboratory animals for drug quality testing, safety evaluation, and research and development activities.
Moreover, the company expanded its production and R&D capabilities. Consequently, the existing ventilation system could no longer treat the animal facility exhaust adequately. Therefore, the client engaged Soto Machinery to design and install a reliable, cost-effective deodorization system. Specifically, the system brings the facility into full compliance with national emission standards. In addition, it provides dependable long-term operation.
The Challenge
Key Challenges Identified
- Complex Odor Profile: First, the animal facility generates ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), mercaptans, indole, skatole, and volatile fatty acids. In addition, biological decomposition processes produce other organic odorous compounds from animal waste and bedding materials.
- Regulatory Compliance: Furthermore, the treated exhaust must meet GB14554-93 Class II emission standards for all specified odor pollutants. These include ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and odor concentration.
- Reliability Priority: Importantly, the client emphasized the need for a system that operates reliably and consistently over the long term. Therefore, the system requires minimal downtime and straightforward maintenance procedures.
- Production Schedule Constraints: Moreover, the installation had to coordinate with the facility’s production schedule. This minimized disruption to manufacturing and quality control operations.
- Humid Climate Considerations: Additionally, Wuhan’s subtropical climate features hot, humid summers that presented additional challenges for system design. Specifically, these include potential microbial growth in ductwork and equipment.
- Space Limitations: Finally, the factory rooftop offered limited space for equipment installation. Therefore, the system required a compact, space-efficient design.
Subsequently, our engineering team conducted a detailed site survey and exhaust air characterization. Based on the findings, the team recommended a two-stage treatment approach. Specifically, this combines plant-based spray deodorization and UV photocatalytic oxidation. Overall, this combination provides an optimal balance of treatment efficiency, operational reliability, and cost-effectiveness for pharmaceutical animal facility applications.
Our Solution
Soto Machinery designed and delivered a compact two-stage waste gas treatment system featuring plant-based spray deodorization and UV photocatalytic oxidation. Notably, the system targets reliable, low-maintenance operation in the Wuhan climate. In addition, it ensures consistent compliance with GB14554-93 Class II standards.
Plant-Based Spray Deodorization (Stage 1)
First, the exhaust air enters a compact spray deodorization tower. There, it receives treatment with a natural plant-based deodorizing solution. Specifically, the plant extract formula neutralizes ammonia, H2S, and other water-soluble odorous compounds through biochemical degradation and molecular encapsulation.
Demisting & Moisture Removal
Next, after the spray stage, the air passes through a high-efficiency demister section. This section removes entrained moisture and liquid droplets. Consequently, this prevents water carryover to the downstream UV equipment and protects the photocatalyst from wetting.
UV Photocatalytic Oxidation (Stage 2)
Then, the pre-treated air flows through a UV photolysis chamber featuring high-energy UV-C lamps and nano-TiO2 photocatalyst modules. Furthermore, advanced oxidation processes decompose remaining organic odor compounds, mercaptans, and VOCs into harmless carbon dioxide and water vapor.
Centrifugal Fan & Stack Discharge
Finally, a high-efficiency centrifugal fan with corrosion-resistant construction draws the treated air through the system. Then, it discharges the air through a dedicated exhaust stack at regulatory-compliant height and velocity.

Reliability-Engineered Design
First, the system targets operational reliability and ease of maintenance, reflecting the client’s priorities. Additionally, all equipment housings use corrosion-resistant materials suitable for the humid Wuhan climate. Furthermore, the UV lamp array features modular lamp banks. As a result, operators can replace individual lamps without taking the entire system offline.
Moreover, the spray deodorization system features automatic solution level control and periodic fresh solution dosing to maintain consistent deodorant concentration. In addition, the recirculation system includes filtration to prevent nozzle clogging and ensure uniform spray distribution. Furthermore, the system control panel provides clear status indication, alarm functions, and straightforward operation. As a result, the client’s facilities staff can manage the system with minimal training.
Finally, the system’s compact footprint optimizes the available rooftop space. Specifically, a vertical stacked design minimizes floor area requirements. Meanwhile, it maintains full accessibility for maintenance operations.

Since commissioning, the system has operated reliably with consistent performance. In addition, third-party testing and ongoing monitoring confirmed the following results:
Verified Performance
First, independent third-party environmental testing confirmed that all emission parameters fully meet the requirements of GB14554-93 Class II standard. Specifically, ammonia removal efficiency reaches 92%. Furthermore, hydrogen sulfide removal exceeds 94%. Moreover, overall odor concentration removal rate stays consistently above 90%. In fact, the system has operated without any significant issues since installation.
Additionally, the client reported that the system has proven highly reliable, with no unplanned downtime since commissioning. Furthermore, the straightforward operation and maintenance requirements impressed the facility’s engineering team. In fact, they took over full system operation after a single training session. Moreover, the plant-based deodorant demonstrated good longevity in the Wuhan climate, with refill intervals meeting the projected schedule.
Overall, the successful resolution of the odor issue improved the working environment for factory staff. In addition, it eliminated potential concerns from nearby facilities. Consequently, the client expressed satisfaction with both the equipment performance and the service from Soto Machinery. Furthermore, they recommended our solutions to other pharmaceutical companies in the Wuhan area.
